Healthcare operators and the quality of earnings

ELP Ventures ·

Reimbursement mix, clinician retention, and regulatory exposure explain more about durability than headline growth rates.

Healthcare services businesses can grow quickly for reasons that have little to do with durability: a favourable reimbursement decision, a temporary shortage of local capacity, or an acquisition programme that has not yet been integrated.

The measures that predict durability are less immediate. The proportion of revenue exposed to a single payer or tariff. Clinician retention, which determines both capacity and quality. And the regulatory record, including inspection history rather than only current status.

A business that scores well on those three can absorb a difficult reimbursement cycle. One that does not will find that growth reverses at the same speed it arrived.

We underwrite to the mix rather than the trend, and we treat clinician retention as an operating priority from the first day of ownership.
