Employment stability, environmental stewardship, and honest reporting are ordinary obligations of ownership rather than a separate programme.
Responsible ownership has acquired a substantial vocabulary and, in places, an apparatus that operates separately from the business it describes. We are sceptical of the separation.
The obligations themselves are not complicated. Employ people on terms that can be sustained through a downturn. Leave land, buildings, and equipment in better condition than they were acquired in. Report results accurately, including the disappointing ones.
These are conditions of competent ownership rather than an additional programme, and they are best assessed by looking at what a business actually does over several years rather than at what it publishes.
Where a framework helps to measure that, we use it. Where it substitutes for it, we do not.
